A. ABOUT THE SITE

The rockmass.net web site has existed since year 2000. Two earlier versions have been presented: version 1 in 2000 to 2008 and version 2 in 2008 – 2011.

Version 3 was launched in March 2011.

Unfortunately, the version 2 of the site was destroyed by a hacker in January 2011. (Who could have any interest of doing this of a site on information only?)

Sorry for the down-time period in February and partly March 2011.

It is hoped that the new layout and content of the rockmass.net page can be of interest and a help to people practicing in planning, rock design and rock engineering.

This first presentation of version 3 of the site contains only the first issues of the new site. As you will find, lots of information remains, which from time to time will be made available when time permits.

B. INFORMATION ON THE  HANDBOOK IN ENGINEERING GEOLOGY

The book of 250 pages was launched in 2000.

C. INFORMATION ON THE  TEXTBOOK ON ROCK ENGINEERING

This book of 408 pages was launched in 2010. The layout of the book and at the same time the process in rock engineering is illustrated  here.

Quotation

Important quotations will be presented here from time to time

Karl Terzaghi:
Even a very comprehensive and appropriately conducted geological survey of the site of a proposed tunnel cannot accomplish more than a very crude estimate of the length of the tunnel sections in which each of the principal types of rock conditions will be encountered. Further differentiation cannot be expected. Hence, even if methods for accurately computing the rock load under given rock conditions were available, they would have very little practical value on account of the inevitable uncertainties associated with predicting the rock conditions.
